SD-WAN

A failing line at one site should not take that office offline while the others carry on regardless. SD-WAN treats your sites as one managed network, so traffic takes the healthiest path at every moment and a single line failure is a shrug rather than a lost trading day.

What this protects

One network across every site

Three sites usually means three contracts, three management headaches and three different ways of doing things. SD-WAN makes them behave as one, and drops the cost of over-provisioning every branch.

Traffic on the best path

Latency, jitter and packet loss are measured continuously, so calls and cloud apps take the steadiest route available.

Cost where it is earned

A lease line at head office with broadband or 4G at the branches, rather than premium bandwidth bought for every site.

A failure nobody notices

When one link degrades, traffic moves to another within seconds, so a single line going down does not stop a site trading.

What SD-WAN actually solves

A business with three sites usually ends up with three internet lines, three routers and three sets of firewall rules that have drifted apart over the years. Each site stands alone, and a failing line at one of them takes that office down regardless of how good the others are.

SD-WAN treats those connections as one managed network. It watches each path and sends traffic down the best one at any moment, measuring latency, jitter and packet loss rather than simply asking whether a line is up. A Teams call gets the steadiest path. A large file transfer takes the roomiest one.

It also removes the assumption that every site must connect over its own expensive dedicated link. You can put a lease line at head office and business broadband or 4G at the branches, then let SD-WAN decide how to use each one.

What it does in practice

Path selection

Traffic is routed down the connection performing best at that moment, judged on latency and loss, rather than reachability alone.

Failover and sharing

When one link degrades, traffic moves to another within seconds, and steady load can be spread across links.

One policy

Firewall rules, application priorities and security settings applied consistently everywhere, managed from one place.

Visibility

You can see how each site, line and application is performing, so arguments about the internet become evidence-led.

Secure by design

Traffic between sites is encrypted, and direct internet breakouts are protected by cloud security.

Cost control

Mixes cheaper broadband with dedicated lines where they matter, rather than paying for premium bandwidth everywhere.

Signs SD-WAN is worth it

  • Three or more sites each paying for separate internet and separate management
  • Applications that suffer badly when a line is congested, such as VoIP, video or remote desktops
  • A head office with a good line and branches with inconsistent ones
  • A wish to add a second or mobile link without redesigning the whole network
  • A need for one security policy that applies across every site

Questions we get asked about SD-WAN

No, that is part of the point. You can run a dedicated line where it matters, such as head office or a data centre, and cheaper broadband or 4G at the branches, with SD-WAN making them work as one network.

A VPN simply connects sites by tunnelling traffic over whatever line is available. SD-WAN goes further, steering traffic across multiple lines based on performance and applying consistent policy everywhere.

Often, if you are currently over-provisioning dedicated lines at every site. It can also cost more at the outset if you add backup links, so we model it honestly against your current spend.

Not for you. The complexity sits with us. You get a dashboard showing site and application performance without needing to configure anything yourself.

Sometimes, though SD-WAN works best on compatible edge devices we supply and manage. We will confirm what your current kit supports before proposing any change.
